The YANMAR 6N18L-SV auxiliary engine experienced a significant failure due to the following issues:

Connecting Rod Bolt Failure: The connecting rod bolts in the crankpin unit #02 failed, causing the connecting rod to hit the engine block.

Engine Block Damage: The window cover of the engine block’s sitting area sustained severe damage. The casting was shattered into multiple pieces.

Additional Damage: The incident completely broke the window cover of the engine block. It also extensively damaged crankpin unit #02 on the crankshaft.

Inspection of Crankshaft and Engine Block of YANMAR 6N18L-SV:

The team inspected the damaged crankpin unit #02 based on the following parameters:
(a) The dimensional inspection of crankpin unit #02 revealed an ovality of 0.16 mm.
(b) The impact from the connecting rod caused the crankpin to develop deep depressions and noticeable impact marks.
(c) The team noticed severe damage on both sides of the radius fillet profile.
(d) The team detected minor hairline cracks on the crankpin, which, based on our experience, typically appear after such a severe incident.
(e) The team observed higher-than-normal hardness at certain spots.
(f) The engine block sustained severe damage, as evidenced by the photographs, with the total length of the cracks measuring 46 inches.
